WATER SAFETY TIPS FOR KIDS THIS SUMMER

THE WEEKLY RUNDOWN

By Montgomery County Recreation July 28, 2021

As far as MCR is concerned, it's always swimming season, but when it's hot outside, an outdoor pool is more for cooling off than staying fit. For kids, hitting an outdoor pool in the summer is more about fun. Other than preparing kids with swimming lessons, here are some helpful water safety tips to keep everyone happy and healthy at the pool:

Never Swim Alone: Even strong swimmers need to have someone out with them in case something happens. In public places like pools or beaches, always swim with a lifeguard on duty.

Don't Swim Sick: The germs that cause the illness can be spread in the water and make others sick.

Don't Swallow Water: While it's natural to swallow some water while swimming, ingesting too much pool water can lead to chlorine poisoning or other illnesses as some germs take longer to die in chlorine.

Adult Supervision Required: While heading to the pool can be fun, stay alert when children are in the water. Parents should be within arms reach of young children at all times. Older children, who are experienced swimmers should be monitored while in the water. Lifeguards may be on-site, but can't be everywhere at once.
