This week we visit Belle Ziegler Park, another City of Takoma Park playground. Named for the Takoma Park Recreation Department's founder and long-time director, this playground is located catty-corner from the Takoma Park Montgomery College campus. It has a large pavilion (we've been to a few great birthday parties here over the years), a soccer field, and two main playground structures.
One structure is designed to resemble a ship, complete with portholes, ladders, and a wheel for your first mate to steer across the seas. There are also two tube slides to get you quickly into the (wood chip) water. This section of the playground has pretty good shade, even midday. The other (much sunnier) playground has three large slides, tubes to climb through, and a bridge to traverse.
There is a bank of four "big kid" swings, two baby swings, a teeter-totter, and a metal climbing structure (quite possibly leftover from when this writer used to visit this park over 30 years ago). On-site are the large trunk remains of a tree cut down some time ago that make for an excellent climbing and jumping attraction.
Belle Ziegler is a great place to visit if you have a train-lover in the house because it sits right across the street from the tracks, and the metro and many other trains roll by frequently.
