With the colder weather and all the recent holiday content, it has been a while since we've highlighted a playground in the MacKID Takoma Park - Silver Spring territory. But winter is actually one of my favorite times to hit the playground because colder months means less crowded parks, less chance of overheating, and less chance of your child getting burned by scorching plastic slides or metal monkey bars.

A few weeks back we visited Takoma-Piney Branch Local Park. This park has many amenities including a skatepark area, a basketball court, a volleyball court, a picnic pavilion, walking trail, and more. Even better, because this playground sits behind Piney Branch Elementary, when school isn't in session, there are actually two playgrounds available.

We parked in the big lot at the top of the smaller playground on Darwin Avenue. There's a long ramp to the play space to make it accessible. The top playground is a good size for smaller kids with swings, a climbing structure that looks like a boat on one side and a house on the other, and an artificial rock to scale.

We quickly spotted the bigger playground down across the field (we went to the park on a weekend so it was open for non-students). It is definitely better for older kids (the school only has kids in third to fifth grade), but my spunky preschooler was up for the challenge of the tall slides, the tricky rope climbing area, and the spinning teacup seats.

The playground has a huge field between both playgrounds where many families were practicing soccer, playing frisbee or just taking walks. This is a playground that would be good for meet-ups as you could probably spend a lot of time visiting all of the areas that it includes.
