Highlighting Our Favorite Area Playgrounds

Sligo-Dennis Local Park

10200 Sligo Creek Parkway Silver Spring, MD 20902

We have been eagerly watching the construction of this playground for months and are excited to report that it is now open for play! The shiny orange and blue updated equipment has a lot of unique features and replaces an older wooden play structure that was a giant splinter waiting to happen.

There is a big obstacle course structure for bigger kids that has ascending discs to climb, a spinning platform and a few large slides. I'm waiting to see how long it takes for my daredevil younger child to climb on top of the metal chains that lead to the slide or shimmy up the the giant X-shaped structures that support the rest of the play equipment.

The playground has a bunch of climbing ladders, both metal and rope, and small set of monkey bars. An updated teeter-totter is near the set of swings. And the little kid play structure is a more traditional with a small slide, a bridge and a little rock wall to climb. There is also a communication board in both English and Spanish with images, Braille, and some sign language that is a really cool addition to making the playground more accessible for all.

This playground is also right next to a fun section of Sligo Creek that has stepping stones across the water that lead from the playground to the trail on the other side. The new play equipment is much less shaded than where the older playground was, and much closer to the road, but this was intentional to get the playground out of a flooding zone.

Sligo Creek Parkway is closed to cars in the section where this park is on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, so if you plan to visit on those days, you will need to park on Dennis Ave, at Sligo Middle School, or in the neighborhood nearby and then walk or bike in.
